How to Write a Ghost Story

A ghost is an apparition, someone who appears to be present but cannot be seen or heard. A ghost can appear in different forms including a shadow, reflection, mirage or hallucination. Ghosts are often seen as evil, scary or frightening but they can also be benign and helpful. Many people believe in the existence of ghosts and the paranormal but others are skeptical or simply do not believe. Some experts like psychic medium Cho, professional intuitive and author of Angel Intuition Tanya Carroll Richardson and clairvoyant Psychic therapist Elizabeth Simmonds-Moore are open to the idea that ghosts exist but feel they need tangible proof to believe.

The classic ghost story usually features a person, a loved one, a family member or someone from the past who is haunting the living to get a message. Often they will show themselves in ways that can be interpreted as supernatural like a sudden cold breeze, noises or ominous light. Occasionally they will even touch or emit an odor, especially perfume or cigar smoke. Sometimes a ghost may have a specific purpose, such as finding lost inheritance papers or seeking revenge.

Write a backstory for your ghost, such as how they died and why they haven’t been able to move on. Many ghosts stay on Earth because they have unfinished business or because they can’t say goodbye to their loved ones who passed away. They are stuck in a certain place, such as their homes or workplaces. They often seek out those who can see or hear them in order to try to resolve the issue and move on.
