What is a Haunting?

A haunting is the presence of a spirit in a home, building or area. Hauntings can be a result of a violent death, tragedy or unfinished business (like the old abandoned insane asylum ghost). But they can also be caused by natural phenomena like electromagnetic energy fields created by changes in geomagnetic conditions.

Some people report the feeling of a presence in their home, especially after they watch a lot of scary movies or TV shows. It could just be the onset of paranoia and can easily be chalked up to a bad case of the jump scares or a random hallucination, but it’s worth considering if the feelings are consistent. Other signs of a haunting include a heightened sense of security and a feeling that you are being watched.

Most hauntings start off with a slow build-up of activity. This includes the moving or misplacing of items, objects that seem to vanish and rooms that are colder than others. Other early signs are noticing smoky light or balls of bright light that look like flashes from a camera.

In the second phase of a haunting, things can become much more intense. Furniture may shake and even fly around the room. The voices may get louder or more aggressive in tone. Full apparitions of shadow people that tend to be elongated or tall can appear as well.

This is what most people think of when they hear the term haunting and it’s what most movies and TV shows portray. This is often what leads to people calling in paranormal investigators.
