Haunting is the state of being occupied by spirits, ghosts or other paranormal entities. It is also the term used to describe a place where this activity takes place. These are called haunted places & they are the centre of attention for paranormal investigators & enthusiasts.
There are many different types of hauntings that can occur. Some are more serious than others & can be dangerous to humans. One of the more common types is called a residual haunting. This is the type of haunting that you will usually find in old homes & other buildings. Residual hauntings don’t have intelligence, so they cannot respond to questions & will not react to trigger objects.
In some cases a haunting can be caused by a spirit out for revenge. This is why so many battlefields & other sites of violence are reported to be haunted. However, most spirits are not out for revenge. They are often the ghosts of people who committed suicide or were killed in some other traumatic way. This can cause them to remain on earth, much like the broken heart of a person who cannot let go of a lost love. Some cultures believe that a ghost may also stay on earth if it is angry over the desecration of a grave or because it did not receive a proper burial when they died.
The problem with hauntings is that they are hard to prove. It is very easy to get carried away with the idea that every bump in the night, creaking floorboards or strange noise is a ghost. Often, these events can be explained by things like the wind, rattling of tree branches or even a leaking faucet. If you are concerned that your home is haunted, the best thing to do is speak with neighbors & ask for information about the history of the house. You can also check the internet for any reports of paranormal activity in that area. If you are still concerned, it is worth visiting a local library & looking through the archives.
