What is a Haunting?

haunting

A haunting, when a ghost or other energy is attached to an object, home, building or location, can manifest in various ways. Traditionally, it involves visual apparitions, moving and/or disappearing objects, noises, footsteps and the sudden ringing of bells and other musical instruments. Other signs can be a sense of being watched, feelings of unease and inexplicable cold spots in a room or a feeling that a spirit is nearby.

Some people think they have experienced a haunting because of unexplained bumps in the night, odd smells and a sense that someone is always in the corner of their eyes. Others are convinced by the accounts of friends who have a personal experience with a haunting. And then there are the true believers, who have no doubt that ghosts and other energies exist and can communicate with us.

Whether you are a believer or a skeptic, you can still learn from the experiences of others and try to discern what might be real from what is simply part of our own imaginations. It is important to be aware that even when a haunting seems to happen, it may be due to something natural, like the infrasound created by earthquakes and certain animals, or changes in the Earth’s geomagnetic fields.

Other factors that can influence a haunting include the historical background of the place, where it is located and what type of spirits are there. For example, a house that has a history of being a battlefield can have a more violent haunting. In addition, a ghost could be attached to an object such as a clay figure or piece of clothing. If the item is found, it is best not to bring it back home as many ghosts leave a slimy substance known as ectoplasm on the object they are connected to.
