Having a ghost visit you in your home is one thing – it makes for a great story or even a scary movie – but when that happens in real life, it can be incredibly frightening. The fact is, most people do not know what to do if they think their home is haunted. In the movies, we would call Ghostbusters, but since they aren’t around to help, you must learn to recognize and deal with the problem on your own.
Residual Haunting
The most common type of haunting involves what is known as residual activity. This is simply energy that has become trapped or imprinted on a location. This is typically a result of something traumatic, such as a violent death or a severe emotional disturbance. These spirits are usually unable to move on. Often, they are associated with the area where they died and appear to remain in a state of regret or fear. Many battlefields and sites of violent crime are famous for their hauntings.
Many ghosts also seem to be attached to particular objects. For example, a staircase has been known to be a frequent source of haunting because of the amount of energy that is expended climbing it. Other signs of a haunted place include bumps in the night, strange lights, and sounds like footsteps or music.
In some cases, the cause of a haunting can be determined. For instance, if the activity seems to occur around only one person, it may be that they are controlling the ghost. To avoid this, management must encourage employees to speak up and make it clear that they will not be punished for reporting a haunting.
